Opening Prayer: 1
Loving God, who breaks through the darkness of doubt and despair, be
with us this day as we hear of the visit of the Wise Ones, who risked
everything to follow a Star. Let us open our hearts and be willing to risk
receiving the gift of gracious Love that you have to offer us in the form
of our Savior, Jesus Christ. AMEN.
Scripture: (Valerie Chamberlain is reading Isaiah , and Renee Dyer is
The Magi have made their way to the manger again this year.
They followed the star and then they had to stop and ask directions in
Jerusalem. Then went on to Bethlehem to find Jesus and his family.
Each year we talk about them following the star. This year I am going
to ask everyone to put on their masks again, so the kids can come up
for a few minutes to help us make our anointing oil again. The Magi
followed the star to Jerusalem, and then needed to ask for help
because they couldn’t do it alone. I kept thinking about making this
anointing oil on my own, but decided I needed to ask for help too just
like the magi. You see it isn’t just about the Magi making it to Jesus, it
is about the Magi being changed by the journey and the experience
they had with Jesus and on the way to Jesus. By asking for help they
even gave Herod a chance to be changed by Jesus, he decided not to be
changed, but their asking, gave him a chance. They gave the people of
Jerusalem a chance too by stopping to ask for directions they helped
people see there was a possibility for something different. Perhaps
some of them had the seeds for change planted in their hearts even if
they didn’t jump in like the magi did.
So, I decided I needed to still ask you for help in making the oil
again this year. I needed to be like the magi a bit and ask for help
because I think our prayers together over the oil our more powerful
than just mine alone are. So, lets make our offering just like the Magi.
We will offer the gold of the olive oil to our King Jesus to be used by the
